Dear friends and colleagues,

You are cordially invited to the launch of Legacy West Midlands ‘Doughnut’ mosaic.

Date: Tuesday 13th February 2024

Time: 11:00AM – 12:30PM

Address: Civic Square, Canalside House, Rotton Park St, Birmingham B16 0AB

The creator behind the mosaic is Claire Cotterill a Birmingham-based multi-disciplinary artist. Claire was commissioned by Legacy West Midlands to co-create a public artwork in collaboration with Civic Square and the local community, celebrating the ethos of the social and environmental activities they undertake in the local area. The artwork celebrates Doughnut Economics, a sociopolitical and environmental concept formulated by Kate Raworth.

Assisted by mentee Rere Demarae, Claire derived the design from creative workshops held with the local community and featuring contributions by Civic Square. Adding a further dimension of accessibility and interest, Claire worked with artist Luke Reynolds to enhance the artwork with an interactive augmented reality element, bringing the commission to life.

This artworks form part of the ‘Roundhouse to Chance Glassworks Arts Trail’, which four art installations have been commissioned so far, each celebrating the industrial and Commonwealth heritage of the area. Tracing the canal route, the first of these artworks, ‘If You Can Sail Here, You Can Sail Anywhere’, was unveiled in 2022, the second was the ‘Black British History is British History’ Sculpture launching in 2023.

Through the project Legacy have brought together established and emerging artists and a range of community stakeholders through co-design and consultation sessions. The trail features works from artists Claire Cotterill (www.clairecotterill.com), Luke Perry (www.ihsartworks.com) working alongside emerging artists Rere Demarae and Canaan Brown.
