Working in partnership with Trident Reach, Start Again and Community Sports Action Network (CSPAN), we have been successfully delivering a three-year project aimed at engaging older Asian men in sport. We have achieved this by creating a 6-a-side football league.

The overall aims of the partnership are to:

  1. Promote health and develop the prosperity of citizens by removing barriers to sport and physical activity, especially those currently inactive and from the most deprived communities.
  2. Support and coordinate a pathway from participation of the inactive through to elite participation, working with national governing bodies of sport.

The 6-a-side football league is targeted at older (aged 35+) Asian men from the Perry Barr and Ladywood districts – areas with the lowest levels of sport participation in Birmingham and above-average rates of Coronary Heart Disease, heart failure, Diabetes, and chronic Kidney Disease.

Legacy WM’s football league attempts to offset some of these issues by encouraging participation in sports and activity.

The league takes place at Goals Perry Barr on Sunday mornings. We have also established coaching sessions for children who come to the league with their fathers, creating a great family atmosphere and fostering a habit of sports within families.
