Samriti is a volunteer at Legacy providing project support on Legacy’s exciting new initiatives including: BADA and British Black History Month. She also provides administrative support for the Legacy team.
Samriti developed her passion for the heritage sector during her undergraduate studies at Aston University where she received her History and Politics BSc (Hons) degree alongside the school prize in history. During her studies, Samriti went on a tour around the Gun Quarter led by Black Heritage Walks Network. This was an eye-opening experience about the depth of Birmingham’s cultural and racial history. This innovative work, in highlighting an unseen part of Birmingham’s history, inspired her to volunteer at Legacy.
As a research assistant at Aston University, she researched Birmingham’s industrial links to slavery and colonialism. This led to researching the Cadbury vs Standard libel trial of 1909 at the Victoria Law Courts. The trial encapsulated the links between slavery, business and colonialism. This culminated in a presentation at the BAFTS Conference and RISC Festival in 2023, where she presented her research to audiences. Samriti also researched Aston University’s origins as the Birmingham Municipal Technical School (BMTS). Additionally, she undertook duties relating to the preservation and digitisation of archival material from the BMTS. This ignited a dedication to uplifting and enriching the local community that she hopes to channel into her role at Legacy.
