My name is Maurice Hockell. I am 34 year old Yoga teacher, qualified nutritionist and personal trainer/fitness instructor, based in Birmingham.
I have been practicing yoga and meditation for around 8 years now and been teaching yoga as part of the Men’s health programme for almost two years.
I deliver many classes and one to one sessions from Soho House Museum, a serene venue located near the city centre. The yoga sessions are for beginners, intermediate and advanced learners and I also deliver specialist support for women and clients with poor mobility and long term conditions. This has benefitted a great number of people from surrounding areas and even further.
Legacy WM have helped me by supporting the set up of my program, providing a base to teach from, which provides a reach out to people who I may not have been able to otherwise.
I have also learnt new things from all the various programs delivered at the head office.
Thanks to Legacy WM for the opportunity.
As Head Coach for Birmingham City University, I am incredibly proud to be partnering with Legacy West Midlands to deliver specialist badminton coaching to young children in the area. This initiative, part of Legacy's Health Promotion Project, is designed to help children get active, engage in sport, and, most importantly, have fun.
The project provides children with a sense of belonging to a club where they can play, learn, and enjoy themselves in a safe and supportive environment. We organise monthly tournaments where participants can showcase their skills and are awarded prizes and trophies for their efforts.
I graduated with a First-Class Degree and a Master's in Community Studies, which fueled my commitment to bettering the community I live in. In 2024, I was honored to be named University Sports Coach of the Year. As a former ranked badminton player, I continue to coach some top-level players, and my background as a business entrepreneur, including running my own catering business, has provided valuable insights into leadership and community-building.
